In 2024, Next Door Dance collaborated with a range of community partners—including the Nottingham Refugee Forum, Nottingham College undergraduates, residents of Maun View Care Home in Mansfield, and members of the public—to create a digital work titled It Starts with a Smile.

Developed in partnership with these communities and filmed by local artist Ella Sugden, the piece premiered at Broadway Cinema in Nottingham during a special celebration event honouring the dedication and creativity of everyone involved.

Alongside the film, Nottingham College students also devised a live performance, which they shared with their peers at the college.

At its heart, the project explored the simple things that make us smile—and how those moments shape our expressions and lift our spirits.
